Charleston Parks Conservancy Leaps Back to the ‘90s with Color Me Badd Benefit Concert

It’s time to revisit big bangs, denim jackets and the boombox. Leap Back to the ’90s as Color Me Badd rocks Memminger Auditorium in a concert benefiting the Charleston Parks Conservancy. The concert is 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Color Me Badd debuted in July 1991 with the album, “C.M.B.,” and such hit songs as “I Wanna Sex You Up,” “All 4 Love,” and “I Adore Mi Amor.” The band went on to release additional albums before splitting in November 1998.

In July 2010, Bryan Abrams and Mark Calderon resurrected Color Me Badd, headlining a concert in Hawaii. Kevin Thornton rejoined the band in 2011 and plans for additional concerts are under way.

In addition to the Color Me Badd favorites, guests will revisit the trends of the 1990s with additional music from the era as well as signature Michael Jackson and MC Hammer moves performed by local dancers. Also, take a look back at Charleston’s parks and their transformation since the early 1990s.

Parks are important to the members of Color Me Badd and they are eager to support an organization like the Conservancy.

“One of my fondest memories from my childhood is playing in the park with my dad, and now I get to share those moments with my children,” band member Mark Calderon says. “Whether that is playing basketball with my son, taking walks with my daughter or just taking a simple family stroll, these moments last forever and will always be ingrained in my mind. That’s why we support Charleston Parks Conservancy because it truly brings families together.”

General admission tickets are $65 each and price includes an open bar. The Meet the Crew tickets are $150 each and include a pre-concert reception, open bar and a chance to meet the band after the show. The event is for ages 21 and over only. Proceeds from the event benefit the Charleston Parks Conservancy and its work maintaining, beautifying and improving Charleston’s more than 120 parks and green spaces.

Tickets are available online at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/222203. For more information or to learn about sponsorship opportunities, contact Brittany Wallace at 843-724-5003 or events@charlestonparksconservancy.org

Charleston in Fodor’s Top 21!

Palmetto Tree at night Charleston in Fodors Top 21!Another feather in Charleston’s cap! Charleston was named ONE of only TWO U.S. cities in Fodor’s Top 21 list of “places to go this year” with the second spot being Oahu, Hawaii; both being described as “buzzy destinations“. Not bad for our quaint, charming small town to be considered among the likes of London, Paris and Budapest. As we locals know and many others are learning, Charleston may be a small town compared to many cities, but we are HUGE when it comes to great restaurants, posh hotels, shopping options, sports, history and the preservation thereof, architecture, cultural venues and events, festivals, beaches, and scenic waterways.

The travel guide gave a nod to Chef Sean Brock of McCrady’s and HUSK for reviving the “farm-to-table” way of cooking and patrons are welcoming this healthy and delicious change; not to mention the farmers and produce providers loving it. Fodor’s also made special mention of Planters Inn for its 18th-century charm along with the award-winning Peninsula Grill housed in the Inn.

Charleston continually receives accolades and awards for its many attributes and all it offers as a vacation destination as well as a place to call home. Charleston’s Mayor Joe Riley is to be thanked for his many years of effort in making the Holy City worthy enough to attract the attention and recognition being received and for which it so richly deserves. If you haven’t been to Charleston, put it on your “bucket list” for 2012!
