Basic Site Questions

  1. 1. How can I submit a full page business profile?

Simply click the big blue Post an Article button at the top right of any page (right below our search window). Once there, simply fill in the blanks, add your web links when asked, add a photo and a video if you'd like, and Voila! Within 24 hours your search engine optimized business profile will be published to the worldwide web!

  2. 2. How can I submit a press release?

All submissions are entered by clicking the Submit Here button at the top right of menu bar, just below the search window. Simply fill in the blanks and click the submit button when you’re done. It’s that simple. The technology in the site will do the rest for you, and within 24 hours you’re submission will be published in Greater Charleston for all the world to see… Google and Yahoo included.

  3. 3. Can I add links to my site or other sites in my submission? Does this cost anything?

Yes you can, and no, it's totally free. In fact the submission page asks for up to three links of your choice, so we encourage you to load us up with valuable links to your sites. We want your readers to have access to all the information you can give them.

  4. 4. Do I need to be a professional writer or photographer to get published on the front page?

Nope. If you have a good story or a great photo or great video that relates to Greater Charleston or its people, then we want to share it with our neighbors here and around the world. Earning placement as a cover story or front page featured article isn't easy, but if you’ve read this entire answer, we think you have it in you. Eventually readers will decide which stories deserve front page placement, but for now we have a team of editors looking for great work. But as long as your content is family-friendly and constructive, you’re guaranteed to get published under one of our news categories and will be searchable in all major search engines. Go for it.

  5. 5. Who writes the stories featured on the home page?

While we have a network of contributing writers, editors, photographers, and videographers who will keep the fantastic content rolling in without fail, every submission to every category will be considered for front page publishing. So if you have an especially interesting story, once you submit your work be sure to contact us to let us know.

  6. 6. Is advertising at GreaterCharleston really free?

Yes, any ad you create using our Submit Here button is always and forever free, and you can submit as many TV commercials or print ads or coupons or giveaways or promo campaigns as you’d like. Just be sure to submit it to the most appropriate category seen in the menu bar above. Even more, we’ll archive these ads indefinitely. Click the “Submit Here” button at the top right and take a look at how easy it is.

  7. 7. Will my submissions be searchable on Google, Yahoo, MSN, and the other major search engines?

Absolutely….nearly instantaneously. Greater Charleston is a true Web 2.0 community-driven e-magazine, video channel, and organic “all local” navigator chocked full of all the good viral stuff the search engines love most – relevance, quality, and honest to goodness free-flowing media of every variety, free of annoying ads or deceptive key-wording, void of hidden agendas or bait-and-switch duplicity. Just the good stuff, and lots of it. Search your name on Google right now. What comes back? Search your friends and family, or your business or employer or church or favorite local personality or civic group or team or club or local topic of interest. What comes back? At Greater Charleston you can finally have impact on the answer. The robots and spiders at Google like it that way.

  8. 8. Who writes the business profiles?

While we expect each business will assign someone on their staff to write their profile, our writers will profile those we endorse as “Businesses You Can Trust™”, and will even shoot video stories about the very best.

  9. 9. Could Greater Charleston serve the role of a private website?

For most small businesses and nearly all groups or individuals – for the reasons above and the dozens of others we’ve yet to share – absolutely. Nothing could be easier, few web tools can claim to be more powerful, and nothing can be more free. Use the Submit Here button to submit your first page and you’ll see what we mean. Furthermore, we’re going to assist primary schools in the development of their own network of pages, galleries, and video channels… all with the same click-and-go ease, and all for free. Never have our area youth had such legitimate publishing power, and schools desperately need help with their media, so please help us get the word out.

  10. 10. How can I contact the GreaterCharleston.com staff?

Our Contact Us link is at the bottom of every page, but our general email address is contact@GreaterCharleston.com. We promise to answer your mail before the end of the following business day. 11. 11. Is there any limit to how many articles or profiles I submit?

    Nope. Have at it.

  12. 12. Is this site really free to use?

YES. Really... absolutely free, and it always will be.

  13. 13. When submitting images, what format and size is preferred?

If you are a digital image novice, you don't need to understand this answer, as our submission engine handles all of this for you. But for you digital whizzes out there, the preferred format for images is "jpg", as it is by far the most commonly available (standard on almost all digital cameras) and has evolved into the most internet friendly format. You can load any size jpg, as our submission engine automatically compresses and resizes the image for best display in your post, but if you know how to reduce your file size and pixel size it will load much faster if you do that before you upload. Likewise, if you know how to reduce the image below 50K, this will also ensure your image maintains the precise levels based on your own preferences. These notes also apply to uploads made into the gallery.

  14. 14. On the Post an Article page, I used the tool that says "Add event to calendar", but it did not post to the calendar. Why?

Calendar submissions go into a moderation cue, so even if you have instant publishing privileges for your posts, all events need editorial approval for the calendar. So give it 24 hours and check back, but please note that due to limited space only events that are deemed important to the entire Greater Charleston community will go onto the community calendar. Thanks for asking!
