  1. 1. Which beaches near Charleston are best for shelling?

Great Question! The GC Genius says that Edisto Beach on Edisto Island is the hands down favorite for beach combing, and is in fact so covered with shells that the sand is hardly visible in many parts of the beach front. From there, the north end of Folly Beach (at the Morris Island Lighthouse) is ranked second, followed closely by the South End of Folly Beach (which is a Charleston County Park). Both of the Folly Beach locations have very light foot traffic due to their relatively remote locations, so you can find some true treasures at each. Then, bringing up the rear are the beaches at Breaches Inlet, which is NOT for swimming due to its historically dangerous currents, but for this reason is known for it's abundance of lightly combed shells. You have Isle of Palms on the north of the Inlet, and Sullivans Island on the south, just a scallop's shell throw across the inlet. Enjoy!

  2. 2. Did Hootie and the Blowfish really come from Charleston? I was told they were from Columbia. Which is true?

Great Question, and the answer is, yes, to both! They actually got their start as a college band at USC in Columbia and played all around the Southeast. But in the year leading up to their great discovery, they were based in Charleston and played the Charleston music scene more than any other, including the scene in Columbia. Band Leader Darius Rucker was born and raised in Charleston and attended Middleton High School West of the Ashley (which is now called West Ashley High School), so "Hootie" as most folks have come to call the band are "from" Charleston in more ways than one. Likewise, Hootie's lead guitarist/songwriter Mark Bryan has lived in Greater Charleston for nearly a decade and still plays around town from time to time. But don't steal Columbia of its share in the Blowfish's legacy, as the band spent its developmental years in the famous college town. Whatever the case, they've certainly made all South Carolinians proud... but especially Greater Charlestonians, as we're the ones who watched them sing on stage at the Windjammer and Acme and the Music Farm one week, and the David Letterman show the next. :-)

  3. 3. Are there any high school football pictures on this site?

Absolutely! Simply click on the Gallery tab in the top menu bar and surf through the schools gallery once there and you'll find that many high schools in Greater Charleston are celebrating their homecoming game this month, and we hope to present full albums and occasional videos for each game we attend. We also hope the public posts more!

  4. 4. How does one get listed on your calendar of events? Is there a charge?

Great Question. First off, every publishing tool currently offered at GreaterCharleston.com is absolutely free. All one need do is make a submission using the big blue "Post an Article" button at the top of the site. After giving the post a title and description and choose a relevant publishing category from the menu offered, you will see the Calendar offering among the optional tools. Simply fill out this section, and once you submit, your editors will determine whether the event is broad reaching enough to be included in the calendar. That said, the actual post will be published to the site (and thereby to Google and all major search engines) even if the event does not get selected for inclusion on the calendar. We simply need to limit the actual calendar to reflect broad reaching events for the sake of relevance... and also due to a limitation of page space within the actual calendar as it is presented.

  5. 5. We have received numerous letters of praise. We have received permission to post them as reviews. Can I use one email address for multiple reviews.

Yes! You may reprint your letters of thanks and praise that you receive from others, and the email and username for comments can be your own even when quoting someone else.
