Once known as “Military Highway,” the closing of the Naval Shipyard in the mid 1990’s saw North Rhett convert from a major thoroughfare into an industrial parkway for Hanahan’s burgeoning industrial and technology base. The rest of the city is framed by Rivers Avenue (and I-26 that runs parallel to it) and Remount Rd. which are among the most traveled highways in the state, so Hanahan is far from remote. In fact, the city is adjacent to the massive Rivers Avenue shopping district which includes Northwoods Mall, and is just 10 minutes from the Charleston International Airport and the Charleston Air Force Base. Hanahan is also well known for having great public and private schools (arguably the best in Berkeley County), for its rolling landscapes along the Goose Creek reservoir, and for it’s very affordable housing.
Hanahan is also home to the beautiful and historic Yeamans Hall Plantation, which is now a private country club that boasts one of South Carolina’s finest golf courses. In 2007 Hanahan’s population was estimated at just under 16,000.
