Positioned at the northwestern edge of Greater Charleston along the west side of I-26, Summerville is a cornerstone of the North Area of Greater Charleston, and is the purest example of “small town America” in the South Carolina lowcountry. Known best as Flowertown USA, Summerville boasts stunning public azalea gardens, rolling landscapes, atypical roadways, and an almost idyllic community identity. While downtown Summerville is just minutes from the massive Rivers Avenue shopping district that includes Northwoods Mall, Summerville also has its own large shopping district, but has also maintained its own downtown historic district that fits the charming model of the 19^th century train-stop towns found across the American landscape. The 4-A Summerville High School is also nationally recognized as an historic powerhouse in high school sports, especially in football, as their iconic coach John McKissick has lead his Greenwave teams to win more games than any football coach in the history of American football at any level. Attending a Summerville high school sporting event is in itself a true slice of Americana, as the locals have worked hard to maintain the feel and excitement of old-school high school athletics while consistently putting highly competitive teams on the fields and the courts. Summerville is in Dorchester County, so all of their area schools are part of the Dorchester County School district, which is the highest rated district in Greater Charleston. As the town’s population has exploded in recent decades, Dorchester County has added 4-A Fort Dorchester High School on its border with North Charleston. Summerville’s population growth has also triggered the development of numerous upper-middle income residential communities that are recognized for their high value and proximity to great schools.

Summerville is also home to many notable historic sites, including the “Must See” Middelton Place on the Ashley River, which is actually part of the upper West Ashley plantation district on the border with the City of Charleston (20 minutes from downtown Summerville), as well as the Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site on the East side of the Ashley River.  Summerville also hosts the incredibly popular Flowertown Festival every spring, which is an arts-festival/block-party fusion that is a true Must See event.  Likewise, Summerville is home to the world famous Woodlands Inn, which many are surprised to learn is the only 5-Diamond/5-Star destination in all of Greater Charleston.

In 2007, the Town of Summerville’s population was estimated just under 45,000.
