Established in 1972 by Robert M. Hicklin, Jr., the Charleston Renaissance Gallery is the nation’s premier dealer in fine art of the American South. Our holdings range from rare eighteenth century portraiture and engravings to acclaimed selections by lauded contemporary artists, including oils, works on paper, and sculpture. Other areas of specialization include the art of the Charleston Renaissance and selections from the estate of Elizabeth O’Neill Verner. Our art has found its way into the homes of connoisseurs around the world and into the halls of this nation’s most revered cultural institutions. A comprehensive index of artists whose works are represented in the gallery’s holdings is available under the Art tab, as is a select list of institutional clients.

In addition to our complement of widely regarded exhibitions, the Charleston Renaissance Gallery has a longstanding commitment to the advancement of Southern art through scholarship. The gallery has published four major volumes on Southern art and regularly releases literary catalogues; our library and archives are unrivaled in the region.

The Charleston Renaissance Gallery is a member of the prestigious Fine Art Dealers Association (FADA), a national coalition of the most distinguished art dealers in America. As the founding member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers Association (CFADA), the gallery participates each autumn in the Charleston Fine Art Annual, a weekend replete with exhibitions by important American artists, studio tours, and lectures.

The gallery is housed in a gracious nineteenth century building in the heart of Charleston’s historic district and features two spacious galleries along with intimate viewing rooms. Painstakingly restored to period perfection, 103 Church Street was recognized with the prestigious Carolopolis Award by the Preservation Society of Charleston in 1999.

A professional art career came late to Peter O’Neill but in truth, it was close to not coming at all. After two failed marriages and a botched suicide attempt, Peter O’Neill felt he had nothing and found himself in a New Jersey hospital hopelessly despondent and in treatment for acute depression. Then something clicked within him. He looked around at the others with truly severe mental impairments and realized that he did not belong where he was. He checked out of the hospital and literally, checked himself back into life. Peter’s childhood dreams had been to become an artist; but he received little in the way of positive re-enforcement. “I liked to draw when I was a kid, but art classes weren’t even offered and when I’d sketch in my notebook, they’d tell me, ‘stop drawing, and pay attention!’” With no positive influence, he took a job in real estate with the lure of riches and prestige. Still, Peter could never shake the feeling that art was his true calling in life. When his career crumbled along with his second marriage, he found himself at a crossroads. So, in April 1996, with only his inner resolve, a heart filled with creative need and relatively empty pockets, he boarded a Greyhound bus for Florida determined to become an artist. “I think I was too numb to know the risk I was taking,” he said. It was just something I did.” At age 36, he arrived in St. Augustine with under $200 in his pocket and nowhere to stay. For a year, he eked out a living as a street artist, doing pencil portraits. His first commission earned him $15.00 – not a lot of money, but proof positive that people would pay for his work. Peter worked as a street artist for about a year and then moved into a small gallery on Treasury Street where he began exploring other mediums. He, like the Old Masters, finally settled on oils and continues to use them today. Mr. O’Neill is entirely self-taught, a fact of which he is quite proud. “I haven’t had to unlearn the garbage poured on students in art school,” he said. “I never had to shed the concept and design theories. I could immediately make art that connected with people and their emotions.” For him, art is a communication between the viewer and the creator. “It should never be judged. There is no good or bad art, only the message of the piece. I am living proof of that. I paint from life experience. My work can be sad, sentimental, happy, rude, or whatever – but it must convey feeling at the core level.”

Nowhere is that more true that in his work “Two Minutes of Silence,” painted in response to the September 11th attacks in Manhattan. The painting depicts a kneeling New York City fireman, his head resting on his shovel, against the backdrop of the collapsed World Trade Center. So powerful was the imagery of that piece that it was chosen by the FDNY and the office of the mayor to grace the cover of the program for a memorial service held at Madison Square Garden. Mr. O’Neill sold the piece for $20,000 and donated the proceeds to the relief fund. In addition, he has donated over 17,000 prints free to Fire, Police, and Emergency Service Stations across the country and plans to continue until the piece is in every station in America. “This is my way of saying thank you to these brave men and women who risk their lives every day.” A limited number of prints have also been donated to raise an additional $100,000.

CBS has referenced Mr. O’Neill as one of the fastest rising talents in America and joins FOX, NBC, newspapers, and magazines in touting his success across the nation. Several national galleries have purchased directly from the O’Neill Gallery to share his talents with their clientele. In March of 2003, Mr. O’Neill was commissioned by Independence Bank in Owensboro, KY to create a series of paintings based on the Revolutionary War titled “From When We Came.” The works depict the struggles of our forefathers. Several private collectors have also commissioned special pieces from Mr. O’Neill and are proud to own his work as part of their collection

Today, Mr. O’Neill owns one of the largest artist owned galleries in both St. Augustine and Charleston, South Carolina. In May of 2009, Peter was asked to join Disney Cruise Line and travel as their guest artist on board. His work is still on display in their permanent collection aboard the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder. In June of 2009, Peter’s work was chosen to grace the set of the nationally syndicated television show Army Wives, filmed in Charleston SC. His iconic image “Two Minutes of Silence” was hung in the general’s office on the set. September 2009 marked the grand opening of O’Neill Studios, INC, a gallery owned and operated by Peter’s previous business partner, Martha Polito. O’Neill Studios can be found on Royal St. in New Orleans.

Gallery Chuma in historic downtown Charleston South Carolina. We specialize in the art of the Gullah people of coastal South Carolina as visually portrayed by internationally recognized masters and innovative select group of emerging artists.
We are a resource center to learn more about the Gullah Culture through Gullah Art, Gullah Books, Gullah Crafts, Gullah Storytelling, Gullah Spirituals, Gullah Tours and Gullah Food.
The Gullah people are descendents of enslaved Africans who settled on isolated sea islands and marshland areas from Jacksonville, Fla., to Wilmington, N.C., in the 19th century. They live in small farming and fishing communities along the Atlantic coastal plain and on the chain of Sea Islands which runs parallel to the coast. Because of their geographical isolation and strong community life, the Gullah have been able to preserve more of their African cultural heritage than any other group of African Americans. They speak a Creole language similar to Sierra Leone Krio, use African names, tell African folktales, make African-style handicrafts such as baskets and carved walking sticks, and enjoy a rich cuisine based primarily on rice. Today, various factors threaten Gullah communities, including developers seeking land to build resorts and condominiums along with younger generations leaving ancestral Gullah lands for college or employment and not returning.
Gullah Art is a recognized art genre, much like Native American Indian Art. Gullah Art by Indigenous Gullah artists are more than just aesthetics, it is a desire by these artists to preserve their culture and lifestyle that is under attack on many fronts

The concept for Carolina Clay Gallery is the opportunity to present to the Lowcountry the unique art of the potters of North and South Carolina. Carolina Clay Gallery features the largest collection of pottery and clay sculptures handcrafted by potters who are continuing a 200-year tradition in the Carolinas. Each piece is individually designed by the artist; many nationally renowned for their beautiful designs, glazes and quality.

The gallery provides educational opportunities to learn of the history, methods of production and the individual process of creativity by offering in-store events featuring visiting potters, wheel demonstrations and special exhibits.

The Owners – Janet and Adi Sbihli and Max
“I’ve always wanted to own and operate my own small business and with the development of Freshfields Village I felt the time was right,” comments Janet Sbihli of Carolina Clay Gallery. “We really like the location of Freshfields Village, not only because it’s close to our home on Seabrook Island, but also because we have a unique mix of customers including local residents, seasonal residents, vacationers, and designers that we hope view our store as a great resource.”

After retiring from the corporate world, the Sbihli’s purchased a cottage near Penland, North Carolina to escape the coastal summer heat. But, according to Janet, they soon realized they would use the cottage as a base to search for beautiful pottery made in the Carolinas. “That is where we found the product idea for Carolina Clay Gallery!”

Carolina Clay Gallery features pottery and clay sculptures that are 100% handcrafted by Carolina Potters. “The pottery is made by men and women who are continuing a 200-year-old tradition in the Carolinas,” Janet explains. “We hope our customers see that Carolina Clay offers a unique shopping experience with bright and lively décor and beautiful displays that make it easy to find the perfect gift or home accessory.”

Brianna draws from her many rich and diverse life experiences to tell the story through the lens.

Brianna’s desire to learn more about photography urged her to study at the College of Charleston. She earned her BS in Spanish from C of C and spent much of her time from 1997 to 2001 immersed in the language and culture of Central and South America. Her experiences abroad honed her already empathetic personality and expanded her artistic horizons.

After three years assisting other photographers, in 2004 she opened her studio in Charleston, SC. Brianna continues to document in Cape Cod during the summer months.

Inspired by Herb Ritts and Irving Penn, as a model and photographer, Brianna offers a deeper understanding and stronger vision to those she captures on film.

Brianna focuses her work on telling the story and capturing the moment. Fashion, commercial, and bridal photography are her disciplines. Brianna’s clients find connection and comfort with her that lasts over time, like the quality of her images.

Thomas-Moore, master model shipwright for 45+ years is in business almost seven days a week–keeping pace with ships in line–from custom building historic ships, yachts, half hulls on commission to restoring, repairing, re-building some of the finest ship models in the world.

The Scoop–At the Ship Shapes Studio, Mr. Thomas-Moore pays careful attention to all details, replicating the authenticity of the original model, and the original design of the former model maker.

He takes personal pride and pleasure in restoring replicas to their full, original condition and beauty.

Ellis-Nicholson Gallery welcomes you and invites you to view contemporary fine art by regional, national and internationally renowned artists. The reputations and recognition of the artists span many levels, from emerging artists to those who have gained national or international recognition and have been included in prominent museum and public collections. We offer you a premier selection of oils, acrylics, mixed media, bronze, metal, clay and hand crafted jewelry.

Our gallery is located in the heart of historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina at 1½ Broad Street. The building erected in 1853 has a long history. Its first occupant of the first floor, where the gallery now is, was Samuel G. Courtney, bookseller and the upper floors housed Walker & James, publishers. In 1856 the building was acquired by Walker Evans & Cogswell, printers and publishers. How fitting that an art gallery now occupies a portion of this building which, from the beginning, had roots to the family of the arts.

The gallery opened July, 2007 with the goal to become known as “the gallery where art is fun” and to build relationships with our clients that will last for years. We look forward to offering you an exciting gallery in a city that is rapidly becoming known as one of the premier art destinations in the country.

The Charleston Artist Guild is dedicated to serving the Arts Community of Charleston providing education in all aspects of the art world: workshops for the practicing artist or photographer, lectures for the burgeoning collector, and community outreach to serve the needs of the greater society through art.

The Guild holds monthly meetings that are open to the public at no cost September through May in which accomplished artists and experts make presentations and give demonstrations in many subjects and mediums.

The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery provides space for up to 50 of our exhibiting artists a permanent place to show and sell their work as well as hosting the Guild’s Annual Members’ Exhibition. Our annual Signature Show and annual Holiday Show are juried exhibitions open to all artists in South Carolina. The Guild’s Spring and Fall sidewalk shows are the longest running arts events of their kind in Charleston. We also work closely with the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in sponsoring the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Exhibition. The shows display over 100 pieces of artwork each and are seen by thousands of residents and visitors to Charleston.

In addition to encouraging our member artists with workshops, programs of instruction, and opportunities to show their work, we reach out to the community to help less fortunate and younger artists in the Tri-county area. The Guild has six on-going community projects:

The Art of Alzheimer’s for elderly artists in nursing homes.

The High School Artistic Merit Awards Competition.

The ASCEND College Scholarship program for high school seniors.

The Extraordinary Arts Competition for special education students.

Art instruction programs for the Charleston Area Senior Citizens Center

Art instruction for the St. Matthews Summer Readiness Program

After graduating from St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, and then UNC-Chapel Hill, Allison lived in New York, Charlotte, Atlanta, and San Francisco to name a few before diving into the Charleston Art Scene. While living in New York, Allison was even offered a job at Christie’s Auction House; however, she turned down the job for something more financially stable, but eventually moved to the Lowcountry to pursue her lifelong passion. Having only been a resident of Charleston for a few years, Allison has thoroughly enjoyed introducing diverse artistic talents to the Holy City. The laidback gallery is full of breathtaking and eclectic work for those seeking something other than the traditional marsh or Battery scenes. Allison is always eager and enthusiastic to find the right painting for prospective buyers, and will even travel to the residences of potential clients in order to help them determine the best pieces for their home. As a wannabe artist, Allison enjoys all visitors to the gallery, even if they are just stopping by to sit down, relax, and enjoy the art. Her friendly yellow lab, Lucy, greets every visitor to the gallery as well!

My name is Marcell Easter. I am the gallery owner and one of the artists. I bought the gallery in the fall of 2006. My background is in accounting and finance with a degree in international business from Thunderbird. I am a self taught artist that has recently entered the field of art on a full time basis.

How we are the perfect fit

Art can rarely be generalized. It tends to be viewer specific. Most art lovers have a wide variety of styles that they like. Our paintings include styles such as surrealistic, impressionistic, realistic to name a few. We like to present art as you would see it. We want to help you in finding the perfect picture. Some of my ideas may help you in finding the right art for you.

You should like the art that you own.
You should have a connection to the art. Maybe it is a place, a memory or a thought.
When you find something good, buy it. If you want to compare, ask the gallery for a print out of the image to keep track of what you have seen. Fine galleries will go out of their way to help you.
The customer comes first.
Let us know how we can help you.
Buy original art

We like to think of ourselves as original. Make sure your art is original.
All the paintings in the gallery are original.
There are too many excellent artist in this area and in the world to settle for a copy.
Fine Art = Original = The First = Fresh = Inventive
A copy = giclee = imitation = print = reproduction

Established in 1997, Ann Long Fine Art has earned distinction as a leading gallery specializing in classical realist paintings, drawings, and sculpture by contemporary artists. We represent two generations of painters who share an education of Old Master techniques combined by dedicated craftsmanship. Led by the expertise of Charles Cecil, Daniel Graves, Ben Long and Jeffrey Mims these inspired American and European artists ascribe to a “slow art” methodology in which they train as apprentices in Florence, Italy, work strictly from life, use authentic recipes and materials, and are guided by a more painterly aesthetic. The result is museum-quality still life, portraiture, landscape and figures imbued with timeless elegance and the fresh perspective of living masters. In addition to our Florence trained artists, we exhibit the African American portraits in graphite, pastel and watercolor by Pratt Institute graduate, Mario Robinson.

The gallery also houses Ann Long Fine Art MODERN which features the unique estate of German Expressionist Otto Neumann (1895-1975) and other mid-twentieth century modernists. Comprised mostly of monotypes, Neumann’s figural and abstract hand-pulled linocuts were never editioned. The work reflects conflict and humanity greatly illuminated within the context of Neumann’s history of personal tragedy and survival of both world wars. He is collected by several major museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Modern gallery also offers editioned lithographs and paintings by other post world war artists Jean Arp, Rene Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Man Ray, Elvira Bach and Paul Wunderlich. Each work is unique to the individual artist’s place in history, psyche and artistic expression within a diverse spectrum of art movements: Surrealism, Dadaism, Fantastic Realism and Abstraction.

It is the goal of Ann Long Fine Art to educate and inform our collectors of the rich history and humanity of the works we represent. Please use our website as a tool to enjoy our inventory. We are also available by phone, email or visit us in person in historic Charleston at 54 Broad Street, Monday – Saturday, 11-5pm and by appointment.

Submission guidelines for artists
We represent living artists who work from life and have extensive classical training. If you feel your art may be well-suited to our needs, please email us images and a CV or resume. If you cannot email, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your submission of slides or photographs to 54 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401. We will not accept original artwork without prior approval.

The gallery opened in September 1997 and offers contemporary craft from over 100 American artisans working in nearly every medium. Our focus is functional art, art that can tell time, adorn your body or measure your coffee. Our artists stretch from coast to coast but also include a few local artists. Among the local artists we represent are Tony Waters, who paints and sculpts; fine artist Sally Jacobs; sculptor Jeff Kopish; bead artist Melissa Earley; and potter Kathy Hawkins. We select our pieces always considering form, function, and value.

RAYMOND CLARK is located in an area of historic King Street that has been a shopping district for generations. We moved our store to 307 King Street in October 2002. In doing so we gained space to promote more artists and landed right in the middle of the busy part of King. We are now surrounded by shops and restaurants and are being discovered by more people than ever.

RAYMOND CLARK has been successful in Charleston for many reasons. We have found that there is a large population here of people who want more contemporary, non-traditional items. We are different from most stores in that almost everything is hand-made by artists in America. We keep our store fresh by always introducing new artists.

Thank you for visiting our gallery. Remember, if you are interested in something that you saw in the store that wasn’t on our web site we are always happy to take pictures and e-mail them to you.

Corrigan Gallery opened its doors September 1, 2005 at 62 Queen Street, Charleston, South Carolina, just off the corner of Meeting and Queen streets in the historic area mistakenly called by some the French Quarter. The gallery exhibits works of art both representational and abstract possessing the charm of old Charleston with a contemporary edge. Representing artists whose work is beyond the traditional approach to the southern landscape of marshes and palmettos, there are new works to see on a regular basis. Artistic vision partnered with an intellectual strength and astute handling of the materials describes the work on display.

Bowing to the masters and looking to the future, the gallery began with featured artists Beverly Derrick, Kevin Bruce Parent, Sue Simons Wallace, Karin Olah, Kristi Ryba, John Moore, Manning Williams, Daryl Knox, JD Cummings, Lolly Koon, Candice Flewharty and Lese Corrigan. This list includes three photographers, two abstract painters and a printmaker and a mixture of all three. Koon, Derrick and Olah have since left the gallery for other projects and artists have been added – they can be found on the news page.

The gallery is showing art that is just for that – art! Not following this year’s fashions but reaching towards the future and showing respect for the past, the presented artwork fulfills the beholder’s need for beauty and the collector’s wish for strong investments. This is art for the soul; art that lets the eyes breath fresh air. Visitors may watch paintings in process on location and view works that have been done en plein air as well as in situ studio pieces.

At 2 1/2 times the size of the previous location, this new space features an open floor plan with three different sections. The custom-made mahogany facade opens into a formal exhibition space for large artworks. Found during renovation, an underground cistern will be visible through glass panels installed in the floor.
The Sylvan Gallery is a traditional gallery featuring nationally and internationally recognized painters and sculptors. The gallery focuses on twentieth and twenty-first century representational art. Many of the artists are members of significant art organizations such as OPA, NAWA, NWR, AWS, AWA, CAC, API, and AOA. A number are invited to participate in the annual Prix de West at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and at the Masters of the American West Exhibition at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. Several of the sculptors have internationally acclaimed monumental bronzes on public display both here and abroad.

Located at 171 King Street, Charleston, South Carolina the gallery is in the heart of the antique and art district of this historic city. Joe and Janie Sylvan bring a combined total of more than thirty years of gallery experience to this warm and inviting gallery. It is a “must see” gallery in a city that is rapidly becoming one of the premier “destination art markets” in the country.
