Much like his work, the life of Edgar Allan Poe was short, tragic and shrouded in mystery. Best known as the author of the popular poem “The Raven”, Poe is credited with creating the detective and horror story genres. After a brief stint at the University of Virginia , Poe enlisted in the Army under the pseudonym Edgar Allan Perry and was stationed at Fort Moultrie at the western end of Sullivan’s Island for thirteen months beginning November 18, 1827.
His time on the island inspired “The Gold-Bug”, a story about a mystical beetle that led to buried treasure. He died alone, impoverished and inebriated at the age of 40 amid conflicting accounts, yet left an indelible legacy on American literature.

Poe’s Tavern, located in the heart of Sullivan’s Island, was founded to preserve the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe. A man who at once celebrated and bemoaned life, and always enjoyed a good drink, or several.

If the band is from Charleston (yes, a not so veiled reference to Hootie and the Blowfish), they likely owe much gratitude to the people who have kept The Music Farm alive and kicking since the 80’s. Wedged between King Street and Meeting Street (on Ann Street) right next door to the Visitors Center, the very cool warehouse building that currently serves as home to the Farm delivers a music lover’s experience worthy of a visit to Charleston even if it’s the only thing you do while here. The full moon stage is dreamy, and the crowd is almost always civilized.

The restaurant takes its name from Pusser’s Rum, first served on board British Royal Navy Ships in 1650 and recently named by Forbes Magazine as one of the ten best rums in the world. And the name “Pusser’s”? Just a corruption of the word “Purser,” the person in charge of the ship’s stock in the Royal Navy.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston has a new “come as you are” casual seafood restaurant with a waterfront view that is a distinctive destination unto itself. Housed in a 1940s retired naval building on the east side of the Charleston peninsula, Fleet Landing restaurant features Chef Drew Hedlund’s fusion of classic and contemporary Southern seafood fare in a setting that celebrates the area’s waterfront heritage. The restaurant’s “maritime chic interior” recently caught the eye of Food & Wine Magazine which featured Fleet Landing in their trend spotting “Where to Go Next” column.

Encased in a hurricane proof, 6,000 square foot concrete maritime structure, Fleet Landing juts out over the marsh on a reinforced pier and boasts oversized windows that offer an unobstructed view of the Charleston harbor. Built in 1942 by the US Navy as a debarkation point for sailors, the building lay vacant after World War II until it was acquired by the South Carolina Port Authority in the 1960s and used for storage. In 1988, when a 21-year-old Tradd Newton pointed out the unique building to his mother and made the prediction “One day, I’m going to put something in that building,” the structure was in disrepair. Fast forward 16 years and Newton, with the guiding vision of Charleston architect Reggie Gibson and Newton’s wife/business partner Weesie, is seeing his dream realized.

Fleet Landing, located at 186 Concord Street, is open seven days a week; serving lunch daily from 11 am to 4 pm, dinner from 4 pm to 10 pm Monday through Friday, until 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and Brunch on weekends. Seating is available on the waterfront deck.

When ex-New York Giants linebacker “Big John” Canady opened his tavern on East Bay Steet in 1954, little did he know it would become a Charleston landmark. It’s aged walls, still covered with Big John’s football memorabilia, have seen the likes of governors to wayward seamen – not to mention almost every graduating Citadel cadet and College of Charleston senior, all of which would echo Big John’s slogan …
Come as a stranger, leave as a friend

Big John’s continues to be a Charleston Landmark. It is just a perfect dive bar – a place where you will immediately either love it or hate it. Stop by for a pint and find out which one you are!

The Oasis Bar and Grill in Folly Beach stayed true to its title last Sunday as it played host to an assortment of lowcountry bands. The venue favors substance over pomp, and has shown itself to be a refuge for any upstart band facing the barren prospects of public performance that accompany the status of “newcomer.” Patrons were treated to an eclectic array of musical stylings, ranging from the driving tempos of The Apprehended to the cooing vocals of Autumn Gold. Four groups rounded out the night: the afore mentioned Autumn Gold and The Apprehended, as well as Factory Bear and the quasi-guitar-duet of Tyler Boone and John Fletcher.

The night began with Beaufort native, The Apprehended. As their lead singer light-heartedly quipped, their style would be completely different from the rest of the bands, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. If anything, The Apprehended jolted the crowd out of their respective conversations and into the music with an energy that, by its nature, is contagious.

Next came Tyler Boone and John Fletcher. Seated atop a couple of bar chairs, guitar and bass in tow, the duo played some original tunes by Tyler, most notably “Don’t Forget My Name,” a ballad of sorts “written for someone which we will not name in this house.” Clever in its simplicity, the pairing allowed for an adroit display of Tyler’s playing and ample opportunity for admiration of John’s beard.

Afterward, Factory Bear took the stage and their respectably-sized following took the standing room in front of it. Again, energy was the name of the game as Factory Bear’s three-man outfit brought that slightly subdued intensity which so often accompanies the indie realm.

Finally, Autumn Gold – whose name adorned the sign outside – came prepared with a mix of their standards as well as some new pieces, despite the absence of lead singer Nic Bongalis. Another group with a healthy and increasing following, the crew shines in their versatility – sometimes folksy and subtle, and other times stirring up the aural equivalent of a passing jet (in a good way).

An incredible display of talent and originality, the show did not disappoint. The performances of all four groups created an electric, engaging experience for all present. While the venue is called The Oasis, it has shown itself to be a diamond in the rough for young, local talent.

Pleasant you can dine and relax in the centuries-old tradition of the post house — wayside inns where travelers stopped overnight for good food and friendly conversation. The beautifully restored building dates from the 19th century, but the food and service are up-to-the-moment. We feature Lowcountry dining favorites with the famous Maverick touch, and there’s a classic tavern that is a gathering place for friends from near and far. And the inn offers six delightful rooms only minutes from the beaches and downtown Charleston.

FUEL uses fresh and simple ingredients accompanied by affordable beers, signature cocktails, and unique wines. You won’t find items on the menu you can’t pronounce, nor will you find ways of cooking that defy the laws of science. Fuel has a tropical setting housed in an old gas station with an indoor/outdoor bar and one of Charleston’s largest patios. The ambience strikes a wonderful balance between relaxation and nostalgia. But the best part is the food, which tastes great every time you visit.

Parson Jack’s Cafe was opened up in Charleston, South Carolina just West of the Ashley River on December 11, 2006. The restaurant was completely designed and decorated by Steve’s Mother, Susan. The booths are all 75 year old church pews, the walls are all adorned with anything “Jack,” and of course, there’s tons of pictures of Jack RussellTerriers.

Parson Jack’s Cafe is a “kid friendly” and “dog friendly” cafe. We have Charleston’s only “Off Leash” dog patio, as well as treats and more for your dog. Our all female staff will make balloon animals for your children and make them anything from our special “Kid’s Drinks” menu. Our accolades include gracious reviews in The Post and Courier, The Charleston City Paper, WestOf, Graffiti Magazine and Southern Paws and Tails.

Even though we’re “kid friendly” during the day, we have one of West Ashley’s most lively bar scenes. With our “soon to be famous” Yappy Hour from 4-7, Live Music Thursday through Saturday, and all of the football and sports over the weekend that you can handle you’ll be sure to find something for everyone.

Parson Jack’s Cafe gives back much to the community. The entire ceiling is covered with currency that has been donated by local patrons for the local John Ancrum SPCA. After the Charleston fireman’s disaster of June 18, 2007, where 9 brave firemen gave their courageous lives fighting the Sofa Super
Store fire, Parson Jack’s Cafe donated over $7,000.00 to the families. We also host many Yappy Hours for various rescue societies around Charleston.

Welcome! In the internet, “beta” simply means “sneak-preview,” with advanced opportunities to gain premium exposure as we perfect the system behind the scenes.

You now have the opportunity to be among the first visitors to submit your writing or business profile for featured placement, or to replace an existing profile, or to review existing business profiles to establish their ranking! To post your profile or writing, simply click Submit Here and fill in the blanks once you get there. It’s that easy! To review an existing profile, simply scroll to the bottom of that page and you’ll be able to click up to five stars! While registering as a user is not required for you to make your submission or write reviews, it will give you greater privileges, and it’s absolutely free, so we encourage you to register soon. For security reasons, we cannot give instant publishing or other site priveleges unless we can contact you and verify who you are, so you can trust registration is purely for the integrity and protection of the family-friendly content of GreaterCharleston.com, and nothing more. Registered users also have instant review/rating priveleges that automatically insert your screen name, so it can also make for a more enjoyable business reviewing effort. The Register link is on the right side of every page, or you can click here to register now. Likewise, you’ll want to register at the Gallery and at GreaterCharleston.tv for similar reasons. You can use the same username and password, or create new ones for each registration, but for security reasons we keep the databases separate so you will need to register for each that you intend to use for submissions. Once we know who you are, we give you increasing freedom and power to move around, and will eventually offer you contributing editor status, which is loaded with even more power and privileges… both in the site and around town! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at Submissions@GreaterCharleston.com anytime.

While we have our own team of writers and multi-media production folks who will be publishing articles, stories, and gallery albums in magazine format, we are also a publicly-driven publishing site. You may have heard the terms Wiki, open-source, and Web 2.0… well all of those aptly describe the organic strengths of this site. But few terms better describe GreaterCharleston.com than “totally free,” always and forever, with no limits to your publishing opportunities. Surf the menu again… we’re sure you’ll see categories where you’d like to be found.

Even now, all of your submissions will be searchable on Google, Yahoo, and all the other major search engines, and you’ll be able to start inviting your friends, your fans, and/or your clients to join others who will be commenting and/or reviewing your submissions. We will publish all business profiles, both those submitted by the public and those produced by our own staff, so if you represent a business be sure you submit as soon as possible so that your competition doesn’t gain all the early traffic. Cheers!
