Spoleto Festival USA was founded in 1977 by Gian Carlo Menotti, Christopher Keene and others involved in the Festival of Two Worlds as the American counterpart to that festival held annually in Spoleto, Italy. A Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Menotti began the Italian festival in 1958 as a forum for young American artists in Europe. The festival quickly became a haven for a large group of artists, both traditional and experimental, who found the mix of dance, theater, opera, music, and the visual arts to be both exciting and stimulating.

When the organizers of the Festival of Two Worlds planned an American festival, they searched for an American city that would offer the charm of Spoleto, Italy, and also its wealth of theaters, churches, and other performance spaces. Charleston, South Carolina was the perfect counterpart. The city is small enough to be dominated by nonstop arts events during the 17-day festival, but also large and sophisticated enough to provide a knowledgeable audience and appropriate theaters. Furthermore,Charleston has an extensive history of involvement with the arts from housing America’s first theater and ballet companies to housing the oldest musical organization in the country.

Spoleto Festival USA has maintained traditions of the Festival of Two Worlds such as a dedication to young artists, a fascination with contemporary effort, an enthusiasm for providing unusual performance opportunities to recognized masters in their fields, and a commitment to all forms of the performing arts. Each year, audience members experience a broad range of artistic styles and forms, including classical ballet; modern and post-modern dance; opera; chamber, symphonic, and choral music; jazz; theater; and visual arts. Spoleto has earned a reputation for offering programs of the highest artistic caliber, supporting new and innovative works, nurturing outstanding young artists, and expanding public appreciation of the arts. This focus has brought the festival international acclaim year after year.

The monks of Mepkin Abbey belong to the worldwide Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. In America and other places in the world we are commonly called Trappists.

The Cistercian Order was founded in France in 1098 by a small band of monks from the Abbey of Molesme. Desiring a purer and more integral living of the Gospel and of the Rule of Saint Benedict, they headed off to a swampy plot of land called Cîteaux. There they struggled to live a communal life of prayer, sacred reading, and work, in an environment of poverty, solitude, and simplicity.

The arrival of Saint Bernard and thirty companions at Cîteaux in 1112 assured the success of the new venture. Through Bernard’s influence the Cistercians grew rapidly and spread throughout the Europe of his day.

The common name Trappist derives from a reform begun at the monastery of LaTrappe in France in 1656, under the leadership of Abbot Armand-Jean de Rancé. Seeking once more a purer living of the Rule of Saint Benedict, de Rancé initiated a series of observances that harkened back to the ascetic rigors of an earlier monasticism. In 1892, three congregations which followed his reforms were united to form the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance.

Mepkin Abbey was founded in 1949 in the Low Country of South Carolina by 29 monks coming from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. Through Gethsemani, we trace our roots back to the Abbey of Melleray in France, one of the earliest foundations (12th century) of Cistercians.

PEOPLE OF THE PLACE: MEPKIN

The property of Mepkin Abbey has a long and storied history and was originally used by the Native Americans as a hunting ground.

The American patriot, Henry Laurens, purchased Mepkin in 1762. Engaged in commerce and the cultural and economic development of South Carolina, Laurens served as the First President of the Continental Congress (1777-1778). He was captured by the British on the high seas as he traveled to France to negotiate military aid. Held in the Tower of London, he was given in exchange for Lord Cornwallis at the end of the American Revolutionary War, and signed the Peace Treaty in Paris with Benjamin Franklin and John Jay. He is buried with other members of his family in a picturesque cemetery at Mepkin, overlooking the Cooper River. His line remains extant and descendants visit Mepkin on a regular basis.

Passing down through various owners, Mepkin was purchased in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, the noted publisher-philanthropist, and his distinguished wife, the Hon. Clare Boothe Luce. They donated a large portion of their property to the Abbey of Gethsemani in 1949, for the purpose of founding a monastic community here.

Shortly after the Luces purchased Mepkin in 1936, Mrs. Luce commissioned the famed landscape architect Loutrell Briggs to create the Mepkin Gardens. They were renovated in 1988 through the vision of Nancy Bryan Luce, wife of Henry Luce III. Thousands continue to visit us and to stroll through these Gardens each year.

Middleton Place was established early in the life of the Carolina colony and served as a base of operations for a great Low Country planter family and was home to a dynamic African-American slave community. Begun in 1741 by Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress, the 60-acre landscaped garden was both an intellectual and emotional focus for successive generations of Middletons. Until 1865, the garden was nurtured and embellished by Henry’s son, Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Arthur Middleton’s son, Henry Middleton, who was Governor of South Carolina and U.S. Minister to Russia; and Governor Henry Middleton’s son, Williams Middleton, who signed the Ordinance of Secession. Despite long absences prompted by education abroad, military service, and public and diplomatic careers, Middleton family members have always returned to this Ashley River plantation.

The development and prosperity of the Gardens changed drastically during Williams Middleton’s ownership. In signing the Ordinance of Secession, he endorsed the last Confederate cause; a failed attempt at independence that eventually led to the destruction of Middleton Place. On February 22, 1865, a detachment of the 56th New York Volunteer Regiment burned and looted the house and gardens. All that remained was the south dependency building, which is today the Middleton Place House Museum.

Two decades after the Civil War, during the great Charleston earthquake of 1886, Middleton Place was dealt yet another destructive blow. The Garden’s terraces were ripped open and the water in the Butterfly Lakes was sucked dry, reshaping in just minutes what had taken scores of slaves a decade to build.

The Civil War and the great earthquake of 1886 had taken its toll, and Middleton Place Gardens lay overgrown and neglected until inherited by J.J. Pringle Smith in 1916. He soon began the massive project of restoring the Gardens to their original splendor of the mid-eighteenth century. The restoration of these elegant and beautiful Gardens gained national attention, and on the occasion of the Garden’s bicentennial anniversary in 1941, The Garden Club of America awarded the Bulkley Medal to Middleton Place “in commemoration of Two Hundred Years of enduring Beauty.” Fifty years later, the International Committee on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has heightened that distinction, naming Middleton Place one of six U.S. gardens of international importance.

In 1974, J.J. Pringle Smith’s heirs established the non-profit Middleton Place Foundation, which now owns the Middleton Place National Historic Landmark. Today, Middleton Place is a thriving restoration or eighteenth and nineteenth century plantation life. Having survived wars, earthquakes, and hurricanes, including Hurricane Hugo in September of 1989, Middleton Place remains a resilient masterpiece of landscape design and a well-preserved plantation that demonstrates two centuries of plantation life.

Middleton Place is open daily at 9:00 a.m.

July 4, 2011 was my first time to go to the festivities at Kiawah Island’s Night Heron Park. Why so long? It seemed like such a trek out to Main/Bohicket/Betsy Kerrison Road just to see some fireworks for twenty minutes and then make the precarious drive back at night. However, some friends were going and I decided to tag along, especially since they were driving. It was a breeze through the Kiawah gate and parking was not a problem at Night Heron Park, where the festivities and initial blasts of fireworks were to happen.

They certainly know how to throw a celebration on Kiawah Island and the Kiawah staff made sure everything ran like clockwork. There was a variety of delicious food, from hot dogs and burgers to grilled chicken to shrimp and grits. To go with your choice of cuisine you could opt for soda, water, beer, wine or something harder for those true party revelers. A magician and stilt-walking juggler roamed the crowd and put smiling faces on all. While the band played oldies and some new tunes as well, dancing, face painting, train riding, games, hula-hooping and bead making was going on throughout the event grounds. Youngsters and seniors alike seemed to be enjoying the evening. The watermelon eating contest cannot be justly described, but the after-mess can be seen in the Gallery of photos. I know my photos are not prize winners, but I think they capture the fun time everyone was experiencing.

At 9:15pm the first blast in the sky brought out the ooohs and aaahs. Some attendees had moved their chairs out to the beach to find that perfect spot to view the Sanctuary’s fireworks which began at 9:30pm. The brilliance of the fireworks dancing on the water and sand was magical. It made me realize the trek was definitely worth it and especially to enjoy it with friends. I hope every American gave the day’s meaning a few minutes of serious thought, beyond just the fun things we’ve come to expect on July 4th. With all of the problems our country has had, is having, and will have….it’s “simply the best, better than all the rest” as Tina Turner would sing.

One thing I know for certain, as long as there are wedding receptions and July 4th celebrations, the Macarena and Electric Slide will never die.

The combination of historic Charleston’s old European charm and the world-class Spoleto Festival USA together produce a unique and impacting synergy for all who come to the city by the sea to experience this magnificent international multi arts festival. But what really adds the ingredient of magic to the mix is Piccolo Spoleto, which provides access to the festival for Every Person, especially children. Focusing primarily on artists of the Southeast region, Piccolo Spoleto is the perfect complement to the international scope of its parent festival and its 700 events in 17 days, transforms Charleston into an exhilarating celebration of performing, literary and visual arts. Piccolo Spoleto’s traditional program offerings include visual arts exhibits, classical music, jazz, dance, theatre, poetry readings, children’s activities, choral music, ethnic cultural presentations, crafts, and film.

Under the direction of Ellen Dressler Moryl, Piccolo Spoleto was designed and launched in 1979 by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs together with a group of volunteers from the Charleston arts community. These arts professionals devoted their time and energy to help produce the various series and presentations which comprised the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Their individual artistic taste and judgment manifested into the comprehensive festival program which for the last 30 years has been produced and presented by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs.

Piccolo’s mission is to provide access to the Spoleto Festival experience for everyone, regardless of their economic, social or physical circumstances and to provide the opportunity for excellent local and regional artists, writers and performances to be presented in Piccolo’s “local venue.” Piccolo Spoleto offers something wonderful for everyone – from classical to contemporary, from traditional to cutting edge. One of the unique aspects of Piccolo Spoleto is the accessibility to the Spoleto Festival experience. Half of Piccolo’s events are admission-free, and the rest are offered at very modest ticket prices.

The Piccolo Spoleto Festival is produced and directed by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs and is funded in part by grants from the City of Charleston; Charleston County; South Carolina Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Thomas Drayton and his wife Ann arrived from Barbados to the new English colony of Charles Towne and established Magnolia Plantation along the Ashley River in 1679. Thomas and Ann were the first in a direct line of Magnolia family ownership that has lasted more than 300 years and continues to this day.

Magnolia Plantation saw immense wealth and growth through the cultivation of rice during the Colonial era. Later, British and American troops would occupy its grounds during the American Revolution, while the Drayton sons would become both statesmen and soldiers fighting against British rule.

The establishment of the early gardens at Magnolia Plantation in the late 17th century would see an explosion of beauty and expansion throughout the 18th century, but it was not until the early 19th century did the gardens at Magnolia truly begin to expand on a grand scale. Since that time, the plantation and gardens have evolved and grown into one of the greatest public gardens in America
with a rich history. To explore that history in-depth and hear the stories of those who lived and worked there over the centuries, visit Magnolia Plantation & Gardens today.

A carriage tour of Charleston is a blend of knowledge, wit, humor, and history. It is exciting and ever changing, the ultimate urban battle of 19th century conveyance in a 21st century city. For me it is most of my life spent driving the streets of the city; recounting, witnessing, and in some cases taking part in the ever-unfolding story that is Charleston. I have surrounded myself with a group of tour guides who are as dedicated to this craft as I am. My four children are among them. We were here before any of the other carriage companies and, together, we have developed the greatest carriage experience in the city.

What are you going to see on the tour?
During the one-hour tour you will be experiencing 25 – 30 blocks of Charleston’s historic downtown district. You will see houses, gardens, mansions, churches, and parks. You will hear about buildings, history, architecture, flora and people.
Most importantly you will become one with all that Charleston has to offer the visitor.

During the summer, many tourists prefer the cool of the evening for their carriage tour. Our evening tours cover parts of the old walled city, historic churches and public buildings as well as the Cooper River Water Front. Evening tour operations are limited and we suggest you call ahead for tour schedules.

Along the way, you will meet people like Gus Smythe, the young Confederate Signal Corps Sergeant up in St. Michael’s steeple with a bird’s eye view of those Union shells flying in from Charleston harbor.

Another person to which you’ll be introduced is Jane Wightman. Jane is a free person of color with her own slaves and a beautiful $2,000 brick house on cobblestoned Chalmers Street. Jack uses his collection of 118 photographs from 1865 to set the mood and illustrate his stories. The calendar in the lobby of the Mills House Hotel says it is 2006, but pay it no mind. It’s the real thing, and we are bound by our mission to preserve the property—that is, to keep it in near-original condition just as the National Trust received it from the Drayton family in 1974. Instead of being restored to the vision of those who lived centuries after it was built, Drayton Hall is an artifact that has survived the American Revolution, the Civil War, the earthquake of 1886, hurricanes like Hugo, and maybe most surprisingly today, urban sprawl. On top of that, it’s not just that it’s a survivor. The main house is considered one of the finest examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture in the United States. The grounds represent one of the most significant, undisturbed historic landscapes in America. And Drayton Hall’s stories—stories of race, family, culture, sacrifice, innovation, and preservation—reveal who we are and where we’ve come from.

The Charleston County Park, Recreation and Tourist Commission was created in 1968 as a county special purpose district by an act of the South Carolina legislature. The original act was amended in 1972, authorizing the Commission to promote Charleston’s historical and tourist attractions, to create and operate countywide parks and recreation facilities, and to provide technical assistance to existing park and recreation agencies and community groups.

In July 1985, the Commission’s tourism function was transferred to the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce and the commission was renamed Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission represents one of the most unique park and recreation agencies in the State of South Carolina. The Commission has specific areas of responsibility that are defined through our legislative act. The Commission is charged with the responsibility to provide park and recreation services, but not to duplicate services provided by the other municipalities and special recreation districts existing in the area.

One of the prime responsibilities of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission is the development of a countywide park system. These parks are generally of a size and scope that would not be developed by other municipalities and public service districts. The park system emphasizes passive activities, outdoor recreation, environmental education, and public beach access. Each park facility offers a variety of programming generally directed toward the natural features and characteristics of the site. The staff and commission of the Charleston County Park and Recreation are committed to maintaining high standards in the delivery of leisure services and facilities to the citizens of Charleston County.

Whether it’s a ghost or a themed tour, such as Bulldog Tours’ R rated version, Charleston offers much to stimulate and spook the senses. A leisurely stroll downtown reveals the whispered history of our city and all notions of southern etiquette vanish.

The Charleston peninsula alone was the site of many sinister happenings. Although the tour guides are happy to tell the tales today, the topics were rather taboo years ago. Ironically, it’s no secret the local culture valued keeping such secrets. In spite of this, however, decades of painful truths emerged. Historians, and the more verbose of the locals, just couldn’t help themselves.

“The Big Brick” was the name of the finest bordello to bless the holy city with its presence. The girls wore red shoes to display their availability. Needless to say, red shoes were very much a faux pas among high Charleston society. It was told, however, that many of the wives knew where their husbands were. After years of tolerance, the epidemic of transmitted diseases convinced the city to enforce the laws. In an attempt to conceal the existence of the Brick, lawmakers changed the name of the street from Beresford Street to Fulton Lane. A failed attempt it was indeed.

Charleston’s own stunningly beautiful Lavinia Fisher was quite possibly America’s first female serial murderer. Standard hospitality at her Six Mile House, an inn six miles from the city, consisted of a deadly cup of oleander tea, burglary, dismemberment, and finally, for those lonely travelers, some company in the mass grave in the back yard. It wasn’t until one traveler who disliked tea escaped that the authorities were notified. Lavinia and her husband were apprehended together and taken to the Old City Jail. At her hanging, Lavinia asked the record crowd if anyone had any messages for the devil they wanted her to deliver before deliberately jumping to her death. She is one of the most recognizable ghosts said to haunt her unmaintained grave in the back of the Unitarian Cemetery, the grave of the judge that sentenced her to death, as well as the Old City Jail. Interestingly, she still wears the white wedding dress she died in and still enjoys robbing tourists of their jewelry.

Next time you’re cruising the river in your fifty foot Sea Ray, try not to remember that the submersive pluff mud of the Ashley River was a burial ground for thousands of prisoners who died at the Old City Jail. In short, the Ashley River is a cemetery. The prisoners were piled on top of each other like firewood and carried to the river in a wrought-iron, checker-patterned “paddy wagon”. Furthermore, the Old City Jail, Citadel stadium, and the parking garage on Broad Street were all built on burial grounds. The original wrought-iron fence of the old cemetery actually adorns the perimeter of the parking garage.

In closing, the tour guides encouraged everyone to check their cameras for ‘orbs’ that show up on digital cameras when pictures are taken in the dark. The usually round, white balls of light are said to be spirits. However, the patterns of light can sometimes take on wild and suggestive shapes of ghostly figures.

Boone Hall Plantation has been open to the public since 1956.

The McRae Family purchased the plantation in 1955 and it was Mrs. McRae who furnished the house with antiques and began giving tours. Today, the McRae Family still owns the property, and they continue to make improvements to the plantation so that you, the visitor, can experience what plantation life was like in the 1800s. As you tour each site on the plantation our knowledgeable staff will help you understand the day to day activities of those who lived on plantations as well the history of the people who lived here at Boone Hall.

Boone Hall is also one of America’s oldest working, living plantations. We have been continuously growing and producing crops for over 320 years. Once known for cotton and pecans, we are still actively producing peaches, strawberries, tomatoes and pumpkins, was well as many other fruits and vegetables for our visitors to enjoy. The U-Pick fields are open in season. Our main modern market on Hwy. 17 is now open for business.

Ed Grimball was born in Charleston in 1947.

His family settled on Edisto Island, about 40 miles south of Charleston, circa 1675 and has been here ever since. He is a 1971 graduate of Erskine College, Due West, South Carolina. Ed has been a licensed tour guide since 1993. A carriage driver his first two years, he opened his walking tour business February 26, 1996.

Many people travel great distances to see beautiful Charleston. Therefore, I go in any weather, rain or shine, hot or cold. There is only one exception to this rule – hurricanes!

I never “farm out” my business to another guide. My name is on the website. I will always give my own tours.

Complimentary ice cold water is provided approximately one hour after the tour starts May 15 – August 31.

Jim and Ann Irvin both grew up on family farms. Jim in Louisville, KY and Ann on Johns Island, SC. Their lives followed similar paths, with families and successful careers. Ann became a teacher and Jim a contractor on Kiawah Island. Being somewhat retired when they met, they decided to marry in 2000 blending two families. Being in their 50’s they both wanted to return to their roots and the quality of life a rural farm community offered. Jim’s dream of making wine and Ann’s gardening and painting hobbies led them to the property on Wadmalaw Island. Thus the creation of Irvin House Vineyard, Charleston’s only winery and vineyard. In March of 2001 they planted 2, 700 muscadine vines and converted farm barns into a winery with a tasting room, creating a unique business and a new attraction for Charleston, South Carolina.

The Irvins have produced 5 varieties of wine. These wines range from a semi-dry to the regular sweet muscadine that is reminiscent of the old South. Muscadines are the only grapes that will grow in the humid climate of the Lowcountry. Irvin House Vineyards works with 4 varieties of muscadine grapes.

Jim and Ann love the setting of their vineyard and wanted to convey that in the whole process of growing the grapes, making the wines and also marketing their product. When thinking of names for the wines, they just looked at their surroundings. They wanted to present what they saw on the wine labels. After naming their wines, they chose fine Charleston artists to bring everything together. Jim and Ann were very proud of their work, but seeing the labels on the wine bottles was truly the most exciting part of their journey.

Open for tastings Thursday-Saturday from 10AM-5PM. Tastings start every half hour. A wine tastings includes all five wines & a wrapped glass for $2.50. Every Saturday we have a FREE TOUR @ 2pm. We offer private tours for parties 15 & up (View Area Events Page). This a great place to plan a date of a lowcountry picnic!

Rice helped create enormous wealth for the Lowcountry since it first arrived in 1685. And Colleton County was perfect for growing it.

The Colleton County Rice Festival celebrates the rich heritage of Colleton County and the contributions made by this cash crop with an arts and cultural festival in the county seat of Walterboro. Enjoy three fun-filled days of family activities in the warm South Carolina spring sun.

Wander the streets of our county seat, Walterboro, and experience a full schedule of family activities.

We suggest you start your visit to the Rice Festival at the Walterboro Welcome Center, located just off I-95 at exit 53. Let us show you why Walterboro is the front porch of the Lowcountry. There, you’ll find plenty of tips about what to see and do before, during and after the Rice Festival.
