The Charleston Harborfest is probably the most full-family, “everything for someone” festival anywhere in the south. With majestic tall ships sailing in from twelve different nations, there was no shortage of oohs and ahhs on land or sea, yet the 4 day festival featured far more than eye candy, and more than 50,000 attendees bathed in the balmy-hot sun for a uniquely Charleston celebration of the sea. It was a true spectacle of maritime beauty and harbor side fun for kids and tourists and country club members alike. In addition to the 19th century transformation or our port Charleston Harborfest featured live music, outstanding food and drink, fine arts, crafts, harbor tours, cocktail parties, historic adventures, pirate re-enactments, numerous air shows including acrobatic stunts and skydiving, and just about every type of maritime exhibit or workshop you could imagine… all along the historic downtown docks of Charleston, the very port where Blackbeard and his ship the Queen Anne’s Revenge staked their clam to pirate fame in the historic blockade of 1718.

All who ventured to Union Pier where the largest of the tall ships made port were surely thrown aback by the spectacle. The main line included Russia’s ship the Kruzenshtern (which is the world’s second largest tall ship on earth) the ornate USCG Barque Eagle, and several other world famous sailing ships. It truly was a time-warping sight, with masts from half a dozen massive sail ships parked stem to stern one behind the other, all lit up with their colorful flags and running lights and a sparkling against sky day and night. If you missed it this year, watch our 2-part video coverage of Charleston Harborfest below and visit our photo gallery for hundreds of beautiful photos. If you were in attendance, you might even see yourself in the gallery or the video. Whether you made it this year or not, once you take it all the beautiful imagery at GreaterCharleston.com, we’re confident you’ll want to attend next year. Enjoy!

Charleston offers an elegant, gated community on 750 acres with only 210 homesites, with fantastic amenities for fisherman, boaters, or sun worshipers. Situated on the banks of deep-water Beresford Creek, you will find “The Ruins”, a gathering place for residents to enjoy the edgeless pool, clubhouse with two kitchens, ice house to fill up your coolers, boat launch to enjoy the waterways surrounding Beresford and Martins creeks, and floating docks to fish, crab, or just dip your toes. Nature trails will beckon you for a morning walk and perhaps you’ll see one of the many beautiful birds that call the various parks and marsh grass home. Grand Oaks abound throughout Beresford Hall and tower majestically over all. The development commands quality, custom-crafted low country homes and many include separate guest quarters in a detached carriage house. There are beautiful homesites currently available to begin building your dream home or, if you prefer, select one of the existing homes ready and waiting…just for you. Homesites range from mid $200’s for interior lots up to $1 million for a deep-water lot with dock. Home prices range from high $800’s to $2 million plus.

The “featured” home is located at 204 Royal Assembly Drive (click on address to view slideshow of home) and is an architectural delight from top to bottom; from inside and out. The builder, Coe Brier, has spared no expense in making this amazing house an amazing “home” for the buyer/s who prefer craftsmanship quality, intense creativity, and a quest for that elusive “WOW” factor. You define a lifestyle that encompasses the beauty of nature in two words…Beresford Hall! You define a house with breathtaking appeal…204 Royal Assembly Drive!

When I first graduated from Regent University in Virginia Beach, going back home was not the first thing on my mind. In fact, it was the last thing on my mind. When I went to college as an undergrad, I told myself that I was not going back home for a long time. I wanted to stay far away from Charleston as possible.

Now I’m starting to realize that I have been a little childish in my thinking.

How can I forget about the place that I grew up in?

The place that I gained and discovered my identity.

The place where I can find peace and not worry about “real world” things.

The place where I could call myself independent.

I learned that you don’t have to have your own things to be independent. Sometimes you can make what you have in front of you your own.

Sometimes you have to go back to the place you started from, in order to properly move on into the future.

I mean how many chances do I have left to make cherished memories here before I move on to the next chapter of my life? Who cares what people say? So what if I don’t have everything yet. I still have enough to make it work.

This is indeed a big transition for a Southern gal such as myself. There isn’t much “South” where I’m planning to go.

Learn to embrace everything around you, your culture, your memories, your family and friends, for they are a part of you. If you don’t, one day you’re going to think back and wish you could stay longer.

So why waste time now? Make it happen.

Old is new again! Living where you work!

Desmond & Betsy Garrity have just opened Crushed Fine Wine in Shelmore Village. Sommelier Desmond has 15 years experience in the Charleston wine market and brings not only his knowledge, but sought after wines which are attractively priced.

Crushed Fine Wine is part of the newly conceived and built Shelmore Village, situated off of South Shelmore Boulevard, between Highway 17 and Mathis Ferry Road at I’on, in Mount Pleasant. The concept is innovative, in that the village consists of clusters of buildings, each containing five or six units, combining residential and retail space, built around open, landscaped squares. The couple live above the shop, and Desmond devotes all of his time and energy to the wine operation.

Crushed Fine Wine carries an inventory selected from small independent producers and importers, wines which are not available in grocery stores or large retail wine outlets. All wines are competitively priced, and the available selection has something for everyone, whether they have modest tastes, or qualify as enthusiasts and collectors.

Crushed Fine Wine displays the wine in a unique way, creating a wall of wine where all bottles are displayed horizontally (technically the proper way to store wine). The wines are sectioned off by style or character, rather than by region or varietal, with over 500 different selections. This allows customers to discover wines, which they might not have selected in the past.

Crushed Fine Wine offers the area’s only large temperature controlled and humidified wine cellar. This walk-in cellar houses in excess of 200 exceptional selections. It allows Crushed Fine Wine to store these wines in an ideal environment.

Crushed Fine Wine offer customers various educational opportunities, as well as wine tastings and wines by the glass. Tastings and seminars will be conducted both by Mr. Garrity, and visiting winemakers, importers, and winery representatives. These offerings are additional aspects of the overall commitment to value and customer service. Wine gift baskets, wine of the month club, case discounts are all regular services of Crushed Fine Wine.

Ready or not, Wieters set to arrive in Baltimore

Thursday, May 28, 2009; 10:15 PM
BALTIMORE — Matt Wieters (Stratford High School, Goose Creek, SC) will make his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night, armed with a potent bat and the burden of fulfilling the role of the can’t-miss prospect who will rescue the struggling franchise from its run of 12 straight losing seasons. It’s an almost untenable situation, even for a player who has had so much minor league success. But the Orioles and their fans have been waiting for Wieters’ arrival since Baltimore drafted the 6-foot-5 slugger with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 amateur draft. “I can understand the anticipation and the excitement that everybody has,” Orioles manager Dave Trembley said Thursday. “You don’t get these guys very often.” Wieters has excelled at every level. After starring at Georgia Tech, he batted .345 with Class A Frederick last year before being promoted on June 27 to Double-A Bowie, where he hit .365 with 12 homers and 51 RBIs in 61 games. He has sustained that success with Triple-A Norfolk, where he was batting .305 with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 39 games through Wednesday. In spite of those numbers, the Orioles waited patiently until they were sure Wieters was ready to face major league pitching. “We’re reasonably comfortable that this is a good time for him,” president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. “We’re going to give it a shot.” The hype has been building since MacPhail made the announcement Tuesday. Earlier this week, the Orioles drew the smallest crowd in the 18-year history of Camden Yards _ 10,130. There could be nearly four times as many fans for Friday’s game against Detroit. “We’ve definitely seen a spike in ticket sales,” said Monica Barlow, the team’s director of public relations. “It’s student night, and the first fireworks night. Between that and Matt coming up, there’s going to be a pretty strong walk up.”

Expectations are extremely high, so Trembley has tried to make everyone realize that Wieters is only 23 years old and will not single-handedly turn around a team that is last in the AL East. “I don’t expect him to bat 1.000. I don’t expect him to be perfect,” the manager said. “I expect him to ease his way in.” Orioles designated hitter Luke Scott said, “I don’t think it’s fair to put pressure on a guy like that. Just leave him alone. It’s not fair to build him up as the next coming. It’s hard enough to play at the big league level. People are just setting him up for failure.” Or, Wieters could be an instant success. “I’ll just attack the strike zone and keep the ball down,” said Dontrelle Willis, Detroit’s starting pitcher Friday. “If he hits three home runs, I might have to change it.” There are no guarantees. Wieters could very well struggle at the outset _ just like Nick Markakis, another Orioles first-round draft pick. Markakis launched his major league career under similar circumstances in 2006, but was batting .175 after his first 20 games. In danger of being sent back to the minors, Markakis finally adjusted. Wieters can only hope to avoid a similar slow start. “He’ll be a good player. Even with all the hype he’s getting, he has a lot of composure,” said Baltimore rookie Nolan Reimold, who played with Wieters at Norfolk earlier this season. “He should be able to come up here and be very polished from the start.” It’s hard to overstate the anticipation for Wieters’ debut, although Trembley did a pretty good job of it. “Should we open the clubhouse at 11? Have brunch here tomorrow for everybody? Is it going to be like Duke madness out there, where people are going to be out with tents?” Trembley said. “I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters to come.” By David Ginsburg,The Associated Press

Most people who live in Charleston recognize it as a historic city overflowing with charm and wonderful hospitality, but if you ever take the time to walk in the shoes of a tourist, you’re sure to notice something unique about Charleston that you may have never noticed before.

Being a tourist in your own city doesn’t require having to visit a museum or even having to take a two-hour bus tour, although both do offer a wealth of knowledge about Charleston’s rich history. Strolling the streets of Downtown Charleston just to admire the old beautiful homes and buildings, the smell or taste of authentic Lowcountry cooking and the friendly attitudes of other Charlestonians is already a great way to start embracing this amazing city.

Walk through Market Street and observe the elaborate weaving of the Sweetgrass basket makers, or jump aboard a carriage ride to really experience the charm of the city. Stop into Fleet Landing to have a tasty southern seafood dish, while sitting out on the deck catching the cool waterfront breeze. But please don’t stuff yourself before trying a dish of their delicious Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee! Afterwards, walk across to the Waterfront Park to take panoramic pictures of Charleston’s scenic harbor from the pier. Any one of these shots is sure to make a beautiful wall hanging.

Living in Charleston you already know that it’s an amazing city filled with great sights and delightful people. It’s no wonder why its history and southern charm attracts thousands of tourists each year. One thing to remember however is that Charleston isn’t just a city for its visitors to explore. So, try being a tourist in your own city, and experience Charleston like you may have never done before.

“The Development of Mount Pleasant,” is the piece of art in the gallery I am most drawn to because I have lived in the Greater-Charleston area my entire life and visit Mount Pleasant frequently. Mount Pleasant is a growing city, which is about fifteen minutes from downtown Charleston, and recently there has been a lot of urban development in the area, mainly because of the beach being so near. The depiction of this urban development is scarily accurate, being a process I have personally witnessed throughout most of my life. Mount Pleasant and the Isle of Palms area is considered a wealthier area, so it is amusing that Crossman paints an obese, blue-collar worker standing in front of a gas station and Wal-Mart, the universal symbol of America. How horrified the wealthy Carolinians living in the Mount Pleasant area would be if they saw their town represented in this fashion! Similarly, because the painting is featured in a gallery named “The Age of Endarkenment,” it is safe to conjecture that Crossman does not favor this development. I cannot say I feel completely indifferent to this issue either. It is true that the urban developments will bring new residents to the area and inevitably bring down the cost of living in Mount Pleasant. However, along with these advances comes the addition of such banalities as more fast-food restaurants, K-Marts, and corporations. I despise the fact that such things are associated with the United States, much less, South Carolina and see them as detractions from the aesthetics and prosperity of our state. To see Mount Pleasant, which is such an appealing and beautiful area lose its southern charm would be appaling and would be damaging to our state’s already declining economy because of how crucial tourism is to the revenue of South Carolina. To remedy this problem, the leaders of the state’s cities and towns should be more selective when choosing which companies to represent and which corporations to allow to build on state property.

Club members and their guests enjoy two championship golf courses, a tennis center, horseback riding, a fitness center and many other amenities.
Each of the 41 three-story town homes is zoned as a residence on the upper floors and commercial use on the first floor. Nicely designed clusters that are modeled after Charleston’s Downtown Mercantile plus residential neighborhoods lining King Street.

Great location at the entrance of Ion with lots of shopping amenities at hand. Great place for a work/live combo.A historic undertaking by the Simpson Organization known for superb urban revitalization. The 125 year Charleston landmark will be home to 60 upscale condominiums anchored by a top gourmet restaurant and boutiques. This will be a nice pick for the sophisticated professional or retiree that wants to enjoy the amenities of downtown. It is now one of the most expensive per square foot condos on the peninsula. They are now taking contracts, however, but closings will not be until Dec. 2010.

Rivertowne is a ungated Country Club community with prices ranging from 200K – 3million. Membership at Rivertowne Country Club is optional as there is also a community pool and other amenities. There are golf course lots, deepwater lots and marsh lots available for new home construction. The location is favorable to access the amenities of Mount Pleasant and only a 20 minute drive to Isle of Palms beaches.

The signature Arnold Palmer course is known to be one of Charleston’s most challenging. Boaters and fishing enthusiasts will enjoy being nestled between the Wando River and Horlbeck Creek.

Great schools make this a good family choice.

While we have our own team of writers and multi-media production folks who will be publishing articles, stories, and gallery albums in magazine format, we are also a publicly-driven publishing site. You may have heard the terms Wiki, open-source, and Web 2.0… well all of those aptly describe the organic strengths of this site. But few terms better describe GreaterCharleston.com than “totally free,” always and forever, with no limits to your publishing opportunities. Surf the menu again… we’re sure you’ll see categories where you’d like to be found.

Even now, all of your submissions will be searchable on Google, Yahoo, and all the other major search engines, and you’ll be able to start inviting your friends, your fans, and/or your clients to join others who will be commenting and/or reviewing your submissions. We will publish all business profiles, both those submitted by the public and those produced by our own staff, so if you represent a business be sure you submit as soon as possible so that your competition doesn’t gain all the early traffic. Cheers!
