Located outside of the West Ashley area off of Hwy. 17 South lies a breathtaking place to call home. Poplar Grove will leave the visitor speechless; and we intend to keep it that way. The 6,000 acres of marshland, woods, canals, ponds, nature trails, and open waterways to the Charleston Harbor are a habitat not only for the fortunate residents who live in Poplar Grove, but are also being preserved for nature and the wildlife that existed long before the thought of developing the property commenced.

The homes in Poplar Grove are built with the luxuries and conveniences desired by their owners, but all the while keeping in mind the preservation and conservation of this magnificent piece of property. It is a hidden gem, soon to be explored by many, and demands, deserves, and expects to be protected. Come see for yourself and prepare to be speechless! Brick bungalows in this quaint, older neighborhood just west of the Ashley River were homes to family names such as Hartnett, Carroll, Caldwell, Webb, Cacioppo, and Melfi. Some folks began, as well as saw their lives end in these post war cottage homes in the mid-1940’s. Typically smaller and in the 1000-1800 square foot range, to this day, the magic and charm of the bungalows and tree-lined streets remain. The Byrnes Down area was once a cabbage patch until the V. Housing Corp. purchased and developed the land to supply the Navy Yard workers and soldiers coming home with housing for their families, once the war had ended.

A diverse neighborhood who’s close proximity to medical facilities, the College of Charleston and beaches make this a popular place to call “home”. There is also the added conveniences of the South Windemere Shopping Center within walking distance and being only 5 minutes from the historic peninsula of downtown Charleston.

Many of the homes have been renovated to reflect current design trends, however, it’s always fun to learn a bit of trivia about these homes. When most of the homes were built, the bathroom tile colors were selected carefully and for specific reasons. As an example, if the back door was actually at the back of the house, blue and white tile was installed in the home’s bath; black and white tile if the back door was to the side of the home. Difference in tile color could also indicate if the home was a two or three bedroom. Perhaps you’ll see the original bath tiles if you are lucky enough to be welcomed into one of these warm and inviting bungalows!

You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy owning a home in Shadowmoss Plantation. You should, however, be willing to live in a family-friendly neighborhood that offers a wealth of recreational activities with its great amenities. It is also convenient to everything the Lowcountry has to offer. Located near the intersection of Highway 61 and Bees Ferry Road, Shadowmoss Plantation is just a 20-minute ride from downtown Charleston. The area’s beaches, the Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach, are also within an easy driving distance. The airport is just 15 minutes away, while the 3 historic plantations and gardens along Highway 61 begin less than 5 miles down the road. Shadowmoss Plantation is made up of nine distinct but connected neighborhoods. It is a quarter of a century old but still growing and still attracting home buyers from the Charleston area and throughout the United States. With approximately 1,100 houses, town homes and patio homes, the sprawling development offers possibilities for a wide range of potential buyers, from newlyweds to families with young children to upscale professionals to retirees. Prices range from the $160s to over $600,000. For all there is to do and see outside Shadowmoss Plantation, the development is best known for what’s inside. Carved through the winding woods, fields, ponds and streams of an original Charleston plantation, Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club features lush Bermuda fairways and dense oak and hickory forests. Designed by Russell Breeden, the semi-private, 18-hole course is a challenge for the best golfers but playable for those of all skill levels. It’s the only course in the Charleston area to be selected to host the South Carolina State Open. Custom homes are currently being built on the golf course in the new Middleborough section of Shadowmoss, with lot prices starting around $90,000 and homes selling up to $625,000. Ainsdale offers a small town feeling with sidewalks and front porches and homes priced in the mid $300s. Other areas such as Turnberry, Heather Glen, and Dunwoody have homes starting as low as $169,000 and reaching as high as $500,000. Patio homes and town homes are also available in Shadowmoss in a variety of styles and price ranges.

While registering as a user is not required for you to make your submission or write reviews, it will give you greater privileges, and it’s absolutely free, so we encourage you to register soon. For security reasons, we cannot give instant publishing or other site priveleges unless we can contact you and verify who you are, so you can trust registration is purely for the integrity and protection of the family-friendly content of GreaterCharleston.com, and nothing more. You can use the same username and password, or create new ones for each registration, but for security reasons we keep the databases separate so you will need to register for each that you intend to use for submissions. Once we know who you are, we give you increasing freedom and power to move around, and will eventually offer you contributing editor status, which is loaded with even more power and privileges… both in the site and around town! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at Submissions@GreaterCharleston.com anytime.

While we have our own team of writers and multi-media production folks who will be publishing articles, stories, and gallery albums in magazine format, we are also a publicly-driven publishing site. You may have heard the terms Wiki, open-source, and Web 2.0… well all of those aptly describe the organic strengths of this site. But few terms better describe GreaterCharleston.com than “totally free,” always and forever, with no limits to your publishing opportunities. Surf the menu again… we’re sure you’ll see categories where you’d like to be found.

Even now, all of your submissions will be searchable on Google, Yahoo, and all the other major search engines, and you’ll be able to start inviting your friends, your fans, and/or your clients to join others who will be commenting and/or reviewing your submissions. We will publish all business profiles, both those submitted by the public and those produced by our own staff, so if you represent a business be sure you submit as soon as possible so that your competition doesn’t gain all the early traffic. Cheers!
